The romance of The Phantom of the Opera will be brought to new life in a classic radio play format on stage in Benalla next week.

The Lux RadioTheatre producer Don Mackay said the performance will recall the golden era of radio — a time before television when the entertainment highlight of the week was the Sunday night radio play.

‘‘The Lux Radio Theatre has recreated that era with actors playing multiple roles, fashioning live sound effects and presenting vintage soap commercials just as they did during live audience broadcasts generations ago,’’ Mr Mackay said.

The Phantom of the Opera is the story of a young soprano who becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius. It runs for one hour with no interval.

The radio play is at Benalla Performing Arts and Conference Centre on Wednesday, May 11, from 2pm.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 concession, $23 seniors, and $19 for BPACC members.

To book, phone BPACC on 57625515 or go to www.bpacc.com.au
