Matthew Fagan is looking forward to performing at St Paul's Lutheran Church for Concerts in the Chapel.

Classical guitarist Matthew Fagan never tires of performing in Shepparton.

His performance for Concerts in the Chapel will be the sixth time he has performed in Shepparton and he was looking forward to it.

‘‘Shepparton has a big place in my heart, opening the door for my composing career, which continues to today,’’ he said.

‘‘Regional Victoria has been the greatest way for me to develop as an artist.

‘‘Every regional town has its own identity, not only in landscape, but the people and their stories.

‘‘I am always inspired by regional towns and landscapes, travelling inspires my creativity.’’

Mr Fagan will be performing Spanish classical, flamenco and classical music highlights from Vivaldi’s, Mozart, Paganini to O’Carolan’s Celtic harp and lute music, which features on his CD, Virtuoso — A Homage to My Ancestors.

Mr Fagan has been a musician for 30 years and loves sharing stories with people through music.

‘‘I particularly love when the audience becomes part of the performance and participate in guitar challenge where we have great fun when I am challenged to perform audience requests,’’ he said.

‘‘I also love to share stories of life on the road, my adventures in music touring with great people such as Billy Connolly and Shirley Bassey.’’

In 2003, Mr Fagan helped compose an orchestral piece called Voyages for the Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra combined with Indian musician Raju Sharma and Shepparton indigenous leader Kevin Atkinson.

‘‘This was a great journey bringing together different parts of the Shepparton community to perform a new work composed for the Shepparton festival in a cross-cultural work,’’ he said.

‘‘The project also gave young Shepparton artists an invaluable opportunity to be part of a new work and experience cross-cultural arts.’’

This was Mr Fagan’s first chance to compose such a large scale work and Voyages went on to be commissioned for 10 further voyages projects across regional Victoria.

It was finally commissioned as the Australia Day concert at Federation Square in Melbourne from 2004 to 2010.

Mr Fagan has many fond memories of working in Shepparton and is looking forward to returning for Concerts in the Chapels.

Matthew Fagan will perform at St Paul’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 14, at 7.30pm.
