Getting into the Christmas spirit: Dylan Stewart, 5, Noah Stewart, 8, and Kayden Stewart, 3, in front of the Wardells’ lights.

Lighting up the street: Matthew Wardell with his son Thomas in front of their Christmas light display in Kialla.

Team effort: The Wardell family is proud of their huge Christmas light display on Gordon Dve in Kialla.

In recent years Matthew Wardell and his family have brightened up Gordon Dve, Kialla, with their huge display of Christmas lights.

He said it was the second year the lights had appeared on their home in Kialla, but Mr Wardell has spent the past 15 years decorating his home.

‘‘We used to live in Arbour Crt in Shepparton and we’d close off the whole street,’’ he said.

Mr Wardell said each year he added to the ever-growing collection of lights and decorations.

‘‘I started when the kids were younger — when they were babies,’’ he said.

‘‘I sort of just started and it kept growing.’’

Mr Wardell said he and his family tried to set aside just one weekend to set up the huge display.

‘‘I’ve got six kids, so everyone gets involved and helps out,’’ he said.

This year, Mr Wardell said his daughter added a special creation to the mix.

‘‘My daughter did the windows this year,’’ he said.

‘‘She called it a winter wonderland and put stuff in the windows for people to look at.’’

But the Wardells’ Christmas cheer and spirit does not end with their lights.

‘‘The kids dress up as elves and stand out the front handing out lollies,’’ he said.

Mr Wardell said it was best to check out the display — at 23 Gordon Dve — after 9pm when you could see the full impact of the lights.

‘‘I’ve actually still got a few more to put up on the front lawn this weekend,’’ he said.

Mr Wardell said their decorations and lights typically stayed up until New Year’s Day.
