Grease is the word for five Goulburn Valley girls.
Shepparton’s Amy McCorry, Tameeka O’Bryan and Tahlia Hann along with Zoe Germon from Nathalia and Rose Grills from Kyabram recently performed on stage as part of the major ensemble for Grease — the Arena Spectacular’s Melbourne season.
The girls were among about 450 young performers who made up the huge chorus which took to Hisense Area for three shows on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28.
Amy said they found the call-out online and headed to Melbourne to audition for the show.
After being selected, the five young dancers and actors were required to complete two weekend bootcamps in October last year and January this year.
‘‘We did two full weeks of rehearsals in the school holidays,’’ Amy said.
The January rehearsals tested the girls when they were practising in 45°C heat.
‘‘We had no airconditioning and there was around 450 kids in a big stadium,’’ Zoe said.
The girls were assigned into specific groups and learnt choreography based on their group.
‘‘Sometimes we’d all dance together and then other times we’d do separate things,’’ Zoe said.
The girls performed three huge shows and got the chance to meet with Grease stars on Saturday between shows.
‘‘We got to go up to the stage and get an autograph and the program,’’ Zoe said.
For Amy and Tahlia, it was not the first time they had appeared in Grease, both having performed in Shepparton Schools Alliance’s production of the same story last year.
The arena spectacular and mass ensemble was conducted by Harvest Rain.
