Shepparton Foodshare’s annual fundraising dinner aims to raise enough funds to provide 250000 meals for local people in need.
The annual fundraising ‘Make a Meal of June’ dinner is on June 6 at Mooroopna cafe Bill and Beats.
Shepparton Foodshare chair Bill O’Kane said last year’s inaugural fundraising dinner was a sell-out.
‘‘Make a Meal of June is a great way to engage with the wider community about food insecurity and food waste,’’ Mr O’Kane said.
He said Foodshare played a critical role in rescuing food otherwise destined for landfill.
Since Foodshare started in 2012, almost two million kilograms of food has gone to local people who would have otherwise gone hungry.
Mr O’Kane said Foodshare received no recurrent funding and it was hoped the evening would raise essential funds to support operational costs.
He said Bill and Beats cafe was again supporting the event, providing the venue and a three-course meal.
‘‘Their chef will serve an entree made from rescued food to show how delicious a simple and cheap meal can be,’’ he said.
Attendees can secure a ‘‘monthly partner package’’ to support Foodshare and will hear from guest speakers Foodbank Victoria’s David McNamara and local youth service The Haven members including Konrad Fepuleai.
Diverse Builders marketing and sales support officer Jamie Nielsen said the business was excited to be involved again this year as the major sponsor.
‘‘It is amazing that our support last year had a direct impact and provided around 31500 meals for local people in need,’’ Mr Nielsen said.
